Last week, we visited the Scotts Valley branch of the library and were pretty impressed with their set-up there. They had tons of toys, blocks, puzzles, and books all set out for the kids to use. And, before that, they had a lovely story time in their Community Room. We enjoyed it enough that we went again this week, but this time on Wednesday.

Last week, we ran into one of our Sutter nurses who was there with her almost 2-year old daughter; this week, we ran into our wedding coordinator, Angela, who was there with her 3.5 year old son! I was amazed she remembered us, but I guess it was her first year working at the Chaminade and we were The Vegan Wedding…she even remembered Tom’s name.

Anyway, Cameron could care less about Jenna (the Sutter nurse) and Angela. She was all about the activities….

This week’s story time theme was trains which, of course, made me think of Dylan who is still smitten with trains. We brought some craft stuff for him to paste together his own train at home.

Now, check this out. I’m no artist, obviously, but I drew these monkeys for Cameron (she’s still obsessed with 5 little monkeys jumping on the bed) and she drew hair on some of them…and colored their bodies in! I was pretty impressed with her ability to keep more or less within the lines!

A little later in the day, she drew a sad monkey face (2 dots for the eyes and a straight line for the mouth). I think she’ll be much better at art than I am!

meeting the cousins

On the day we came home from Sutter, Auntie Cindy and Lola came to the house with lots of food and 3 out of 4 of my nephews!

They took Dylan out for ice cream, then came back and we hung out in the backyard enjoying the gorgeous weather. I’m certain Chloe is basking in the love…!

another day, another doc appointment!!

Today marks Chloe’s 15th day. We started off the day with Music Together with Cameron and then we had yet another doctor’s appointment, this time to check Chloe’s weight and, for good measure, her bili level. Although her bili level is still at ~16, she is now 7 lbs. 7.75 ozs, 4.75 ozs. above her birth weight. All good news! My personal feeling is that her bili level is probably lower now that she’s had a huge post-doctor’s visit blowout!

…Yesterday, Chloe and I went to Dylan’s gymnastics where she had a massive blowout after which 3 moms separately remarked that Chloe looked less yellow. I had to agree!! Hooray for mommy milk and huge poops!

weekend highlight

Big highlight of this past weekend: having lunch with Auntie Christina and Uncle Dre at one of our favorite beach hangouts!

The weather was just amazing!!! Unfortunately, this also meant that traffic was super heavy. We so often go to the beach on weekdays and non-peak times that we sometimes forget we live in a tourist town!! Our visit was cut a bit short due to traffic, but we enjoyed every minute of it!! As for Chloe, she slept through the whole meal!

pretty goopy

Chloe was born at 3:57am on Monday, February 20, 2012 — 10 days too early! My last official day at work was the previous Friday, but since I had to take a half-day off from work due to Dylan being sick and needing to be picked up early from school, I ended up wrapping up work items on Saturday! Admittedly, I was surprised when I woke up on Sunday with contractions. I thought maybe, just maybe, it was Braxton Hicks, the worst case I’d experienced of the 3 pregnancies. The contractions were about 9 minutes apart and not terribly regular. I reported this all to Tom and told him that if he wanted to go out for a training run, he’d better squeeze it in now just in case I went into labor. I went on to tell him that I didn’t think I would and that I still believed she’d be “on time” rather than early (like Dylan) or late (like Cameron)! Still, he ran loops in the neighborhood so he could easily get back…just in case.

By the time HAT came over at 3pm, the contractions were at about 6 minutes apart. Recalling the last time they were 6 minutes apart, I told everyone that they might space out again. I was still hoping I could make it to Tuesday to give Tom time to recover from his cold (he still had a mild case of laryngitis and a cold) and to give me a chance to get a hair cut, and to give all of us a chance to prepare some more.

Given that the contractions seemed to be more regular, though, Tom went ahead and packed his hospital stuff (mine had been packed for about a week all ready) and he installed the car seat. Then, we set down to play a game with everyone laughing and joking that we’d better get going if we were to finish playing before I gave birth.

I started really tracking contractions around 6pm — they were coming fairly regularly at 3-5 minute intervals and, still wanting to remain in denial but realizing I probably couldn’t, I finally called my sisters to warn them and to tell them to plan on spending the night in case labor dragged on. I also called Sutter to ask them for advice. They said it was up to me, but it still sounded like early labor, so we finished out our game of Blue Moon City with Heather and Assaf.

After the game ended, we decided that it was probably a good idea for the kids to settle in over at Heather’s house since it was pretty close to bedtime already. Heather and Assaf packed up the kids (except for Cameron who we’d decided needed to fall asleep with us before being dropped off) and Tom and I waited for Cindy and Christina to arrive.

I called Sutter again around 11pm and they said that it was still up to me (contractions were still 3-5 minutes apart), but that usually people checked in by this point. I went up to shower (still in denial that I was actually in labor for good) to help “calm and relax” my muscles as suggested by one of the Sutter nurses. It didn’t really help. So, I finally told everyone that I should probably just check in so that when things got really uncomfy, I would already be there. I told Heather, Cindy and Christina I’d call them to let them know when they needed to come and that they should try to nap in the meantime.

By the time we got to Sutter at 12:17am, I was already 5cm dilated. We called in our labor support (sisters and H.) and they arrived sometime around 1am. This time, at our nurse’s suggestion, I tried sitting on an exercise ball, wiggling my hips from side to side and bouncing up and down a little to try to coax my water to break. I asked about drugs, but by the time I’d asked about the possibility of fontanel(?), our nurse said it was a bit late for that and they couldn’t administer it too close to delivery because it would make the baby sleepy. Not having slept yet, I told her I was worried I would be too tired to push when the time came. So, we discussed epidural possibilities and also the possibility of having the doctor break my water to move things along; we went with the latter.

So, at some point, in comes Dr. Van Ooy, she “breaks” my water, contractions really start to feel painful, I whine and complain that I can’t take it, the nurse tells me to try standing up as that might speed things up and when I do, oh…my…gawd. One push and (Tom and team tell me that there was a huge gush of water when I pushed–I had no idea, all I felt was extreme pressure)!! The nurse said try one more push, I whined and complained, but did and the next thing I knew, everyone was saying they could see Chloe’s head and I heard the doc telling everyone to get me back on the bed right away.

I whined and complained that I didn’t know if I could get myself up there. Somehow I did…with help, of course. Then, more screaming and through the haze, I hear the doctor telling me to stop pushing and breathe. The next push (or was it the next one after that), bloooooop…there she was. Chloe tumbled outta me and they put her goopy, little vernix-covered body right on my chest.

I will never forget that moment — she is our last little baby. There will be no more moments like this ever again. They left her there for 2 hours, putting off weighing, measuring, etc. I just held her sticky little baby self and thanked her for coming out so fast. After they finished with the stitches, I tried nursing her and she latched on like a champ.

It’s been 2 weeks now, and we are all of us still in love. Dylan and Cameron constantly want to “pet” her on the head. Cameron giggles when she compares her hands and feet with Chloe’s and Dylan is constantly hovering over her and cooing about how cute she is.

Oh yeah, her stats: 19″ and 7 lbs. 3 oz. You forget just how tiny they are when they’re newborns! I’m savoring every moment!!

Quite by good luck, by the way, we had Chloe in Room 205, the very same room that we had Dylan and Cameron in! With Cameron, it was a coincidence that we got the same room; with Chloe, we requested it and were lucky it was available! Even though she was early, she picked a good time to come; Sutter filled up pretty quickly while we were there…they even had to send someone to Dominican for lack of space there! So, had she waited until Tuesday, as I’d hoped, we may well have had a different room or may have even been sent away!!!

And, here are a few more pics from the 20th…

Among other things this past weekend (went to a bday party up in Boulder Creek and saw The Lorax in the theatres with HAT and Anyam and Grandpa), we gave Chloe her first in-water bath! Dylan and Cameron were falling all over themselves and each other trying to help out. Tom and I had our hands full trying to keep toys and extra washcloths out of the little tub!!

Chloe was as mellow as could be and took everything all in stride!

So far, Chloe is really helping to make the transition to 3 a smooth one. She is still sleeping lots and since she eats well and pretty regularly, we can predict our windows of opportunity for getting stuff done (e.g., getting Dylan to school, driving long distances, etc.). The windows of opportunity are fairly small since she nurses about every 2 hours (though it seems like she’s starting to go a little longer between meals now), but it’s enough time to get at least a little bit done here and there. Still wondering what she’ll be like once she really “comes to…!”

10 days…

Ok, so today I survived taking both girls to story time and to the hospital in the rain, and I managed to pick up Dylan and Taliana from their after-school program with Chloe and Cameron in tow! I know it sounds small, but truly, I’ve been anxious about this scenario for a while–managing all 3 kids at once! First, Cameron isn’t as obedient as Dylan and she is also more independent. So she’s more likely to stray and explore — not too far, but certainly away from my side — far more than Dylan was/is. Anyway, toss in a lack of second hand to hold her’s because of the need to hold an umbrella and, boom, you’ve instantly got an even more anxious mom.

But, at the library, Cameron did listen well and she did stay close to me (even though she did stray outside the radius of the umbrella!), especially while we crossed the parking lot to get to the side entrance!

By the time it was time to take Chloe back to the lab at the hospital, I’d figured out that having Cameron actually help me hold the umbrella handle would be an excellent way to keep her tethered closely to my side (again while crossing the parking lot).

And, luckily, by the time it was time to pick up the big kids from school, it had stopped raining!

As to lab results, Chloe’s bili level is up a little to 14.9, but this is a very slow rise over the course of 2 days and it won’t require any more medical intervention (we think)! There’s a chance that it is due in part to breastmilk jaundice (which, incidentally, was ruled out with Dylan), but even that should resolve on its own….

This was taken just after we’d gotten discharged from Sutter. We (Tom, Chloe and I) surprised Dylan by showing up at his gymnastics class…!

back at Sutter
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Chloe is changing everyday it seems, so I’m trying to be good about taking a picture of her everyday! This one is back at Sutter. We took Chloe for her 5-day old bili check on Friday and, surprisingly, her bili level had jumped to about 17 (it was declining on day of discharge–Wednesday). We took her back for a blood draw on Sunday and it was up to 20.4. We got the call from the doctor at around 4pm that same day and she told us to check into Sutter immediately so we could start phototherapy without any further delays.

We learned more about bilirubin than the first time around. Phototherapy doesn’t destroy the bilirubin, it just modifies the molecular structure such that it can be excreted in urine as well as poop. Basically, this meant that Chloe still needed to eat (as well as be on the lights).

At first, there was talk of repeating Chloe’s hearing screen (at really high levels, hearing loss can occur), so I was anxious enough that I couldn’t sleep at all that night. Instead, I woke Chloe up every 90 minutes to nurse her, whether she was ready or not, so she would continue to pee and, hopefully, poop, too!! The doctor also wanted me to pump after every nursing so we could supplement Chloe with even more chow (well, I only managed to withstand 2 pumping sessions, but it was enough to get about 20ml, 10 of which we ended up feeding to Chloe via a syringe and tube).

So, back to the picture…it was taken the next day by one of the lactation specialists at Sutter. She happens to be a neighbor and she remembered me from Dylan’s and Cameron’s births (she’d see me strolling along in our ‘hood pretty regularly after both babies were born), so she came in to chat and then wanted to take a picture of us. I look like death warmed over, but at least we got a picture of Chloe at 7 days old!

Also, to everyone’s delight, Chloe’s bili level went back down to 14.1 overnight. By the next day (Tuesday), it was at 14.7, which means it has stabilized. Tomorrow, we do one last heel prick to check her level again, but I expect all will be well. Babies’ levels usually peak at 5 days and then steadily decline on their own. In the meantime, the girl is just chowin’ down and gaining lots. As of yesterday’s doc appointment, she was back to 7 lbs. and she’d gained 2 ozs. overnight (docs hope for .75-1oz of weight gain a day). She may well be back to birth weight today!
