play date with Nate

Nate and Dylan’s cake for Finley
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

We’ve been thoroughly enjoying our long Thanksgiving weekend! Today, we hooked up with Nate for a playdate at the park. These two boys are so sweet they even kept Finley there in spirit! Not sure who’s idea it was, but both boys were totally on board with the Grand Plan of baking up a sand cake for Finley, complete with nature decorations (for an apparently nature-themed birthday!)!

While Nate went off in search of more decorations, Dylan worked on the base!

Cameron was out like shout in the car, so poor girl didn’t get a chance to run around in the sunshine….I don’t know where she got this, but she was screaming that her outfit didn’t look good on her (“I don’t look goooood in this!!”). For a couple of parents who really could care less about current fashion trends, this sentiment was a shocker! Anyway, the fit apparently tuckered her out!

Even after Nate had to leave (his baby sister Camille’s nap was calling), we stayed for another 30-45 minutes while Dylan continued to play … and express how he’d wished Nate could stay longer!

I love how these boys still think of one another even though they no longer see each other every day….

2011 SV Turkey Trot
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

This year, Tom had to skip the SV Turkey Trot because he injured his hip during last week’s run, but we still took the kids to do their races.

Traffic was so horrible just getting to the parking lot that despite the fact that we left plenty of time to get there, we were nearly late! But, once we realized the whole traffic situation was just ridiculous, Tom pulled the car over and I hustled the kids over to their respective start lines….

We didn’t want the kids to miss their start times, so I stuck with Cameron while Dylan and Tom lined up for Dylan’s race. As you can see, Dylan did awesome! This was the first race where he basically had to get ditched at the start line (poor planning on the organizer’s part, I think–there were a lot of crying and scared kids) and he had to wait a looooooooong time before his wave of 15 runners or so got to get going, but he braved it out and ran like a champ (and, of course, as soon as he saw/heard Cameron and I on the sidelines cheering him on, he started veering towards us instead of the finish line!!).

I’m not surprised he was in one of the last waves of kids; he is still one of the least non-aggressive kids I’ve ever met and I’m sure he got jostled to the back in the line-up…!

Once he’d crossed the finish line, I was worried about losing him. I had no idea where Tom was and I had several feet to cross — through crowds, no less — to get to him, so I tried calling him back towards me (being separated from my kid, for even a moment, was enough to irk me about the event planning set up as well). Luckily, Tom was somewhere near the finish line already having hustled there after lining Dylan up for his race and, by the time I got there with Cameron, I could see that Dylan was with him! Phew!

li’l Cameron
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Poor Cameron had a less positive experience. She was so freaked out by the mascots there — and possibly the crowds as well — that she didn’t want me to even put her down! Prior to her run, I tried to settle her down by pointing the finish line out, etc., but even I could tell that if I put her down where her line of sight would be quickly reduced to the backs of the kids around her, she would quickly return to an anxious state! So, I just held on to her and when she protested running on her own, I didn’t push it and I jogged with her in my arms to her finish line!

By the end of her little run, she was still so freaked out by the mascots, she didn’t even want to have anything to do with her goodies (water bottle, t-shirt, hand sanitizer on a key ring!)!

Dylan discovered a new obsession: Snap Circuits. And, it’s true, they’re pretty cool. You complete the circuit to power up things like a buzzer, a small light, and a microphone(?). He and Tyler created a project with a light and a device that played happy birthday and had us all crawl into Jason and Tyler’s massive tent to “camp” in the dark! Even Cameron had a blast! Jason and Tyler think it’s hilarious when she laughs and they all just erupt in contagious laughter! It’s really pretty sweet!

our vegan Thanksgiving
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Anyway, one of the pros and cons of traveling for Tgiving, on the heels of a morning run, no less, is that everything must be cooked the night before (the upside, of course, is that once we got to Cindy’s house, it was all about just finishing/warming things up in the oven)! And, both luckily and unluckily, I got downed by a horrid tooth infection this year and could barely function so I basically had to call in sick from work. In half-zombie state, I was able to do a lot of prep work for our meal during the day (and I even managed to check in a little code, too!). This year’s menu was maple-glazed brussels sprouts, candied sweet potatoes, pumpkin praline cheesecake and butternut squash filled with a fig-pecan stuffing (Tom, as per usual, handled the entree!). We also picked up a Field Roast from the store and Cindy had actually prepped some spaghetti squash for us along with some cranberry sauce. Delicious. Even Dylan really, really liked the butternut squash! And, of course, Cameron ate up brussels sprouts and sweet potatoes like there was no tomorrow….

Another year, another fun, family Thanksgiving!! We are grateful for wonderful family and friends, good food and, most especially, for Grandma Sharon’s safe (and hopefully fast!) post-surgery recovery.

It was cold and Cameron is still a little sick so we were a little late in arriving, but rather than giving up on the whole proposition (we arrived after the kids’ race had already begun!), we registered Dylan and he went out there and ran with enthusiasm!!

Assaf had called the night before to tell us he might bring the girls to the run, too, and sure enough, there they were! As always, Dylan was so happy to see his buddies.

He had a great time running it and, afterwards, he had Tom write up a sign saying that family, friends with race ribbons (Taliana and Karamalynn), or race bibs could climb up into his bunk!

Being the thoughtful boy that he is, he made a ribbon for Cameron as soon as we got home so she wouldn’t be excluded!!!

Tom’s back to running this year, so we took his latest event as an excellent excuse for a little weekend getaway in San Francisco!

We were a little worried about the weather, but wouldn’tcha know? It totally cooperated. It rained only when we were in our room, and it stayed away for the duration of Tom’s run and for the rest of the day while we explored!

The kids were awesome, as usual. Both of them love being away from home!

It didn’t rain, but it sure was cold! On our first day there, we got a new knit hat and gloves for Cameron and a pair of “magic” gloves for Dylan (but they were too floppy for him to want to wear!)! We also got mass transit passports for unlimited rides on Muni, the streetcars and cable cars, so we took mass transit everywhere!

Dylan tried to keep warm in the stroller until, finally, Cameron’s antics enticed him to join her. This gal has so much energy, it’s incredible! She loves doing things on her own (putting on her shoes, applying lip balm, carrying bags, etc….) and she loves climbing and balancing and running! All along the way, she practiced bear crawls and turtle walks!

The next morning, the kids woke up early!! So while Tom set out on his run, the kids and I had some breakfast, played restaurant, watched the streetcars go past our window (turns out having a room facing the street had an upside!) and got ready to see Tom at the finish line!

The start/finish line for the race was mere minutes away from our hotel, so it was a quick and easy walk…and it was an absolutely gorgeous morning!!

I love how Dylan’s face lit up and he started bobbing and swaying to the music as soon as we got into the finisher’s area and he heard the music blaring from the speakers!

Tom, by the way, had a great run!

After lunch, we rode the cable car back up to the Cable Car Museum and spent about an hour or so checking out all of the gears and cables that make the system work. In all of my years living in California, this was the first time I’d been there (!) and it was so awesome to see it! Even more awesome, is Dylan’s interest in it. He is clearly interested in how things work and seeing the inner workings of the cable car system was no exception. He spent minutes on end watching the workers repair a cable (one line happened to be down, so the wheels weren’t cranking!) and had endless questions and comments on how it all worked and why did San Francisco decide to keep their cable car system, etc…? At one point, when I pointed out that the cable car was busted and we could tell because the wheel wasn’t moving, he corrected me and told me that the cable was busted, but the cable car was just fine!!!

We all had so much fun, we’re thinking of going back again for an April run…Dylan already wants to ride the streetcars (that also ride on rails), but he wants to ride the older ones with the peeling paint…he’s even willing to let the newer-looking ones go by so we can get on an old one (he knows there are older ones because he “spent a lot of time at the curtain” (as in the curtain in our hotel room!)!

Heard so many stories and saw pics of friends who actually saw whales so up-close right here in Santa Cruz that I decided I’d try to take the kids after work one day. As bad luck would have it, there were NO WHALES that day …a volunteer for the Marine Discovery Center told us, and he’d been watching for them all day, so we knew it to be true!

As you can see, though, all was not lost. It’s an understatement to say Cameron likes being outside. She LOVES the beach …. Dylan does, too, but he couldn’t hide his disappointment that we were on West Cliff and not at Harbor Beach!

Cameron was all psyched up about looking for whales: “we’re looking for whales,” she’d sing-song as she galloped along the way! I was so sad we didn’t see any!

Dylan’s day started with a parade first thing in the morning. It was very, very cute. Juan wasn’t there, but Mrs. Mueller, a German lady who taught the kids to count in German(!) was their substitute teacher and she tried to organize an early-morning class picture. Not everyone was there, but Dylan was! You see him? He’s the valiant knight in the back.

Alright. So it took an hour to frost those tiny cupcakes and I had to wake up at 6:30am to do it. But, Dylan loved it, so it was worth it.
