Dylan lost his first tooth yesterday!
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

For the final week of summer before school starts (on August 28th!), we registered Dylan for “Around the World” summer camp and what does he do on his first day? He loses his tooth at snack!!! My, was I surprised when I went to pick him up!! He is just thrilled as can be!

He left a very sweet note for the tooth fairy telling her that he lost his tooth during snack and he would like to “kepe” it. Well, she let him have it–and since Tom and I were a bit behind and forgetful to boot, he got a “first-tooth bonus” (i.e., a big $ surprise–we told him to tell people that he simply got cash and to not specify the amount so as not to make others feel sad if they’d gotten fewer dollars than he).

We also nearly lost the tooth! The baggy that it was in was apparently open! Luckily, after a careful retracing of steps with flashlight in hand, we were able to locate the little nub (which is now back in its bag and hanging from a “curiously strong” magnet on our fridge).

He is so excited about this event! I am, too, although, I’m also a bit sad. These kids they are a-growing, so fast, so fast!

Cameron was sick today so I stayed home with her and tried to do a little work. When the working thing failed, I let her “facepaint” a panda on me using magnatiles as both palette and brush(!), we read books…lots of books, and I installed an instance of Tiny Tiny RSS on my domain, updated my enlarge flickr images plugin, and modified a bunch of NEF (raw Nikon photo) files on the Mac laptop. Oh, and I cleaned up a little (not that anyone can tell, though!).

Cameron was so patient with the latter tasks, when it came time to pick up Chloe and Dylan, I offered her a vegan cookie.

This cookies was no ordinary cookie, though. The whole backside of it is chocolate-dipped, so now you see what happened when Cameron so kindly shared her cookie treat with Chloe. We were in the car and I was driving while Cameron was giggling and telling me she was sharing. I was just so pleased by the generosity that I was blinded to all else.

Boy was I surprised when I went to the back of the car to get the girls! Chloe was obviously very pleased with my response!!

Week 8/9 – camping at Samuel P. Taylor SP

We left for a 3-day camping trip just this past Sunday! We had waited a bit longer than expected to make reservations, so our first choice campsites (Big Sur and Butano) were already fully booked up! So, we had to be adventurous and go a little further than we’d originally planned (it was about a 2-hour drive). The gamble paid-off! We camped just north of SF in absolutely beautiful Marin. I think if I didn’t live in Santa Cruz, I might choose to live in Marin. And the kids loved it, too. Dylan left camp saying he wanted to live in the redwoods (and I had to remind him we lived very close to Redwoods and those redwoods are one of The Main Reasons why we chose to live in Santa Cruz!!!) and he didn’t want to leave. On our last day, he was urging me to make another reservation so we could come back!

We lucked out with campsites, too…well sort of. HAKT and Heather’s parents shared a campsite (#46) which just happened to have a lovely natural slide, a downed tree trunk that looked to have been a goosepen (smooth and blackened on the inside) lying just at the right angle! The kids loved it, Chloe included!! That baby is quite the intrepid explorer. If I wasn’t ready to follow her up the hill to the slide, she went up on her own!

Chloe also LOVED hiking. She actually hiked more than Cameron did (luckily, Cameron still fits in the backpack carrier). And, Dylan, wow. He impressed us. We were able to do the 3.7 mile hike from campsite to Pioneer Tree (all up hill for more than a mile!) with him doing the whole thing on.his.own! This is huge, folks!! The previous day, he did the entire hike from campsite to the old Paper Mill Site and swimming hole (about 2-ish miles round trip, again with some decent hills).

As we walked (me with Cameron on my back and Chloe napping in the Ergo on Tom), I realized we were in a “sweet spot.” Dylan is now at an age where he can go fairly far, and since the girls can both still fit in carriers, we can push to Dylan’s new farther limits! Next year, we may well find ourselves on the shorter hikes once more–Cameron will be too big for the carrier, but probably not so able to do 4 miles on her own quite yet!!

But, still, next year will have a sweet spot, too. Chloe will be bigger and even more independent–already, she is so capable of understanding and following our words–and Cameron will probably be more resilient! This year, we let Dylan and the girls run around the campground on their own as it was small enough that we could hear/see them just about most of the time–and I expect this trend will only continue. This means us grown-ups have a bit more room to just sit (and relax)!

I’m not hurrying to get to that point, though. With every new thing that Chloe does (today, she started saying “tall” and “small” and “bobo” all from the Jez Alborough book, Tall!), I’m acutely aware of how quickly she’s growing up. She is very, very expressive and alert and has such a great sense of humor already. She laughs along with the big kids already. She “gets” their jokes and silly expressions and suggestions and she copies the giggle-inducing antics (I hope I never forget their lolly,lolly,lolly,lolly,lolly,lolly,lolly…BOP/with clap!).

She is also so sweet. If Cameron cries, she’ll often give her a hug and a pat to make her feel better (sometimes at my suggestion, but sometimes just of her own initiative)! And she likes to share (at least sometimes! Sometimes, if it’s a treat thing, she’ll flat out say, “no” very firmly — and sometimes with vigorous head shaking–if you ask her for a bite!).

So, Dylan is also finally getting his first seriously wiggly tooth (bottom left front tooth). I tear up just thinking of his face changing with giant permanent teeth coming in!!

But, ah…these are the thoughts and experiences one has the time to dwell on while away from the crush of everyday work life!! I loved camping and not having the internet (due to work or interest in news or researching hobbies) intrude on my time with the kids! I loved watching them LOVE being outdoors, getting dirty and being so active (poor Dylan didn’t have his bike with him, so he RAN after the girls on their bikes for hours!)! [But, yes, we also loved coming home and getting clean!!!]. I loved hearing Dylan talk to Heather’s mom about Hungary–he is such an interested and inquisitive guy–and watching Chloe wave bye bye to chipmunks and birds! I actually loved hiking with Cameron on my back and talking to her while we walked!

Anyway, pictures soon–still have the busted laptop (I suspect the motherboard finally overheated), so I’ve yet to fix up the pictures!

Week 8 – oh, my!

hat party
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Week 8 was definitely eventful. Our good friend Mariah celebrated her 40th with a funny hat party. Tom wore his Mad Hatter hat, and I stuffed my coconut into Dylan’s White Rabbit hat!

Ok. So, it was weird to be at a party without our kids! We had some margaritas (Mariah’s dad was manning the margarita machine!!) and talked with a bunch of other parents we knew…and there wasn’t a single kid tugging at anybody’s shirts or clutching anyone’s pant legs!! And…it was fun!

So, where’d we ditch the kids?? Mariah had actually arranged a super cheap kid-care with a nearby local gym, but Dylan, worried about being with strangers, didn’t want to go (despite the fact that we’d told him Finley and Nate would be there as well)! But, luckily, we decided to hire one of the preschool teachers to come watch Chloe (Chloe was invited to the party, but she’s not really a sit in your arms kind of gal anymore and we figured it might be nice to mingle without abruptly leaving a conversation to follow her around!) and Liz agreed to watch all 3 of the kids for marginally more than just watching Chloe.

By report, the kids were exrememly helpful with Chloe and so much fun to hang out with. Liz was impressed that they didn’t even ask to watch TV and that they were content to just play!

Party only went on until 8 (when gym daycare expired), so we made it back home in time to brush the kids’ teeth and snuggle up with them for bed!

Week 7 – Festival of the Book and BJWRR

This year’s summer reading program was a significant one–it was the first time that Dylan really, really read (fluently)! And he worked so hard to earn all of his summer reading dollars. We are so proud of him–I love seeing him really want to complete his goals and work so earnestly — and joyfully — on achieving them!

Because he worked so hard, I am so glad I checked the Summer Reading Program schedule before I headed out for my run with Jenny. If we’d missed it, we wouldn’t have been able to collect his summer reading dollars!

So, after my run with Jenny ended (and, luckily, I mentioned it to her because her daughter Julie had also been working hard and Jenny had also forgotten about the festival!!), we packed up the kids and headed to the park.

They all collected their free lunch coupon (only chips were eaten–and I ate the vegan hot dog out of sheer hunger. Blech), their free book, their summer reading dollars AND we all got a professional family photo taken. Too bad we knew nothing of it beforehand. Here we were in our grubbies, but hey, it’s a family portrait (I’ll scan and post it soon) and these are rare!!!

Unfortunately, these things take time! Kids wanted to play on the playground, snack at the table, etc., etc., and we ended up leaving Santa Cruz too late to get to a good friend’s housewarming party way over in Redwood City! We were actually hustling to get there, but it’s over an hour away and, of course, as luck would have it, there was horrid traffic on the 17. But, Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad was also having a celebration–a new steam engine (#5) debuting on Billy Jones Day! So even though we couldn’t make it to Redwood City, we braved the traffic anyway and took the kids to the park. We almost gave up several times…it took probably about an hour to get over the hill (that’s only 12 miles folks!), but in the end, of course, it was so worth it!!

Week 7 – visiting with old friends

We had an incredibly busy week what with all of our ordinary stuff — T/Th swim lessons, Wednesday piano lesson for Dylan, and Friday morning gymnastics for the girls — but H.’s best friend from elementary school was also in for a visit from Indiana where she and her hubby had moved about 10 years ago! Through H., Val and I also became friends (so I’ve known her for almost as long as I’ve known H., meaning nearly 20 years), so it was extremely nice to be able to see her again on their daughters’ first trip back to California!!

When they left, their eldest daughter was just about 2 or 3 and now she is an amazing 13-year old, so wise for her years…a voracious reader (she went through all of the Harry Potter books in about 5 days!), and such an interesting and easy young lady to talk with! We met their youngest daughter (now 9) for the first time. We enjoyed dinner at HAKT’s house on their first night in Santa Cruz and hosted dinner at our house on their last evening. So my personal laptop died, so I’ve been unable to sift through photos, but I’ll post some pictures soon. The kids had a great time hanging out together, especially playing in the mud (building fairy houses, of course), and there are definitely some sweet shots!

Week 7 – Chloe has fun at the Boardwalk!!

Chloe’s first time on Bulgy
Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

Well, Week 7 of summer included Chloe revisiting her Boardwalk experience! The first time riding anything there, she was pretty overwhelmed; this second time, though, she was ready!

We went on a Tuesday afternoon with Heather and the girls–I left the office a little early so the little girls and I could join the big kids! And, it could have been that the excitement all of the big kids had was infectious! So, when the big kids rode the big kid rides — and Dylan, now at about 42″, rode a lot of rides for the first time!!–I took the little girls to some old favorites.

The kids were in line for the Rock O Planes, and it was Tuesday evening, meaning $1 rides, so I picked up some tix and plopped Chloe into one of the Bulgy fish! She looked a bit skeptical and frowny, but when it was over, she signed (and said), “moh. moh” so we went on it again!

Next up were the Sea Dragons. Cameron was so brave and she went on her own while I rode with Chloe.

By the time we got to Convoy, Chloe was totally at-ease. I let the girls ride in the cab and I rode above them outside.

Unfortunately, we had swim class that night, so we didn’t get a chance to squeeze in Cave Train or Ghost Blasters! So glad Chloe is now happy to ride! And, as for Dylan, he rode Pirate Ship, Sea Swings, Rock & Roll, and Cyclone for the first time (luckily, T. is tall enough to chaperone him and K. is tall enough to ride on her own!)!

Originally uploaded by coffywoman.

We’re about ready to bike, as you can probably tell. Chloe is just now (finally!) ok with riding in the back of the Yuba Mundo. So, today was our first family bike ride (yesterday, Tom stayed home with Chloe while I went out with the big kids).

Of course, at the Boardwalk, the kids wanted to ride a few rides which made for a pretty late night! Chloe rode the carousel and Sea Dragons and cried on both. She’s clearly overwhelmed by and and sensitive to lots of stimulation! I should mention, too, that she spent much of the concert with her head on my shoulder with my hands covering her ears to dampen the sound!

Heather has been picking Dylan up from summer camp (on his non-piano lesson days) so while he’s having a blast with the girls, I have been able to get some extra work time in. So far, we are still loving summer. The kids are sleeping until about 8 in the morning, though, and it’s been nice not to have to rush Dylan off to school by 8:30am! I think transitioning back to the school schedule will be rough!

summer week 5!

Fifth week of summer was definitely very busy! We went to San Diego for Tom’s CSU meeting, squeezing in Legoland, Seaworld and dinner with the family before heading back to attend Auntie Christina and Uncle Dre’s engagement cocktail…and then I ran a half marathon and got a PR the next morning!

Here are the big kids at the party. They both wanted to wear something “fancy” and both picked out their own outfits. For Dylan, this is huge because (like me), he is totally fan of the Casual! (by the way, I’m picking these photos from flickr, so they will be all out of order. Apologies in advance!!)

The party was fantastic. We’d gotten in from southern CA at 4am and so both Tom and I were pretty beat, but celebrating the happy couple’s happy engagement perked everyone up.

It was a tiring, but very fun week!
